{RE}INTRODUCING
Unbound
Long Distance Pack
WEIGHT 27.3 oz40 + 55 L CAPACITY

BUILT FOR THRU HIKERS AND LONG-DISTANCE BACKPACKERS, THE UNBOUND 40 AND 55 GET A GROUND-UP UPDATE.

Now built with exceptionally durable Dyneema® Woven Composite 3.9, the result is a lighter, stronger, more comfortable pack. Contoured removable stays, a refined hip belt, and curved shoulder straps handle heavier loads with ease, while seam taping and low-profile daisy chains keep the build clean and functional. A removable compression system secures trekking poles and oversized bottles, and trail-proven favorites — dual-entry front pocket, bottom pocket, V-Pull hip belt, side bottle pockets — remain as intuitive as ever.

Redesigned to Carry You Thru Any Trail

LIGHTER WEIGHT

The new Dyneema® Woven Composites offers increased performance and comfort on trail while weighing less than the originals.

MORE SUPPORT

Two contoured removable stays help when carrying heavier loads, and redesigned shoulder straps feature an adjusted shape for a better fit.

STREAMLINED LOOK

A new modified construction allows seam taping inside of the pack and bartacked loops have been replaced with a sewn-in daisy chain.

Almost everything about the updated Unbound feels lighter, thinner, more minimal, and more svelte than its predecessor.

Frequent Questions

Fabric & Construction

The fabric. The packs now use Dyneema Woven Composite 3.9, a woven 200-denier face fabric with the same Dyneema core found across all DCH packs.

No, it's been removed entirely. This cuts weight and is replaced by a sleeker sewn-in daisy chain running up and down the front and back panels, offering multiple lashing points.

Fit & Carry

Yes. Previous Unbound packs had a single stay; the updated version has two. Despite adding a stay, HMG was able to keep the pack's weight down, resulting in lighter carry with better support.

The straps are now shared with the Windrider, Southwest, and Junction packs. They're a bit wider than before, which improves comfort and load-carrying on longer days.

Yes, the hip belt remains removable. The lumbar panel has been updated to fit tighter and carry weight more effectively.

It's sewn through with the two stays, providing solid load transfer, especially for heavier loads and longer days on trail.

Pockets & Attachment Points

They've been redesigned to nest bottles more securely and are more user-friendly
overall. The compression strap is still shock cord, but it now uses an improved cord lock that can be adjusted (loosened or tightened) with one hand while wearing the pack.

There's now a removable piece of shock cord with a hook that can be repositioned or
removed entirely if you want to strip the pack down further. Upper side compression straps are also included, with less hardware overall for a lighter, more reliable build.

Yes— this is new. There's a sewn ice axe loop at the bottom and a removable ice axe toggle at the top, a notable addition for PCT and CDT thru-hikers.

They were initially made smaller during testing, but based on feedback, we reverted them back to their original larger size — so they're essentially unchanged from before.

Yes— two sewn-in loops near the shoulder straps allow you to attach an optional zippered interior pocket, sold separately on the website.

What's Unchanged & Buying Options

  • The V-Pull design
  • Large side pockets
  • 5/8" hardware and webbing throughout
  • Dyneema stretch mesh front pocket (dual access)
  • Bottom pocket
  • Fully taped interior seams (maintained even without the old
    binding)

The Unbound now comes in white, black, and a new gray colorway, all in the 200D fully woven fabric.

We gathered feedback from AT, PCT, and CDT thru-hikers over the past several years and used it to streamline the pack — making it lighter, more durable, and overall improved.
