How to Choose a Pack Size

Your torso length, not your height, determines your pack size. We recommend the following to determine yours:

  1. Tilt your head slightly forward to locate the bony bump at the base of your neck. (This is your 7th cervical (or C7) vertebra).
  2. Using a flexible tape measure, have someone measure starting at that spot and running down along the curve of your spine.
  3. Place your hands on your hips so you can feel your iliac crest, which serves as the “shelf” of your pelvic girdle. (It’s the first hard thing you feel when you run your fingers down from the sides of your ribcage.) Position your hands so your thumbs are reaching behind you.
  4. Have your friend finish measuring at the point where the tape crosses an imaginary line drawn between your thumbs. This distance is your torso length.
    • Small (15.0” - 17.0” torso)
    • Medium (17.0” - 19.0” torso)
    • Large (19.0” - 21.0” torso)
    • Tall (21.0”+ torso)
  5. If your measurement falls right in between sizes (for example, if you have a 17.0” torso, so you are right on the line between a Small and a Medium), we suggest you choose the larger torso size.

Appalachian Trail thru hike 2014

Started on 1-1-2024 at Springer mountain… with a junction…lg…

Needed a medium belt in Marion, Va…

Saw the unbound 55 version and fell in love…unfortunately they only had a medium size pack with a medium sized belt….carried it fine all the way to Baxter and summited Mount Katahdin on October 10th, 2024…

I needed to have a large pack… with a medium size or small size belt….

So when I got back home…ordered a large pack…and small belt …

Fits perfectly!!!

I appreciate the ability of the unbound series to be able to adjust or change the hip belt…necessary for waist adjustments for anyone who attempts a thru hike…

Wonderland Trail Rockstar

I originally bought this to do the Wonderland Trail in last year and it was the perfect tool. I've used this up to 7 day backpacking trips (40L) and it's been great. Held up to rain, hail, snow, and kept everything inside dry during all of it. I live in CO, so since doing the Wonderland I've also taken it all over the Rockies and found it more durable than expected. At first I was worried I'd rip it as I'm not the easiest on my gear, but this has proven the perfect pack.

I heard someone say they didn't get the white because it shows dirt.... it does show dirt. But it's a backpack so I don't want it to look brand new and clean anyway.

Love it!

I love every piece of Hyperlite gear that I own. I've used the Unbound for a short trip in the NC mountains and will be using it for longer ones in Peru, the Wind River Range, and the Tetons next summer. It is all I need for two nights or six nights!
