How to Choose a Pack Size

How to Choose a Pack SizeYour torso length, not your height, determines your pack size. We recommend the following to determine yours:

  1. Tilt your head slightly forward to locate the bony bump at the base of your neck. (This is your 7th cervical (or C7) vertebra).
  2. Using a flexible tape measure, have someone measure starting at that spot and running down along the curve of your spine.
  3. Place your hands on your hips so you can feel your iliac crest, which serves as the “shelf” of your pelvic girdle. (It’s the first hard thing you feel when you run your fingers down from the sides of your ribcage.) Position your hands so your thumbs are reaching behind you.
  4. Have your friend finish measuring at the point where the tape crosses an imaginary line drawn between your thumbs. This distance is your torso length.
    • Small (15.0” - 17.0” torso)
    • Medium (17.0” - 19.0” torso)
    • Large (19.0” - 21.0” torso)
  5. If your measurement falls right in between sizes (for example, if you have a 17.0” torso, so you are right on the line between a Small and a Medium), we suggest you choose the larger torso size.

Comfortable and efficient

The Contour 35 is more comfortable than the Waypoint which has rigid frame, rigid waist belt, rigid shoulder straps. For the same size, the contour gets you a nicer fit, the add-on pockets and waist belt is a must. The pocket underneath for snacks and trash is great. The pockets on the shoulder straps are great. For a dialed in thru Hiiker it’s just the right size it’s not too big. Being waterproof is also important to me, I think it’s a must for any pack.

Warning, does not work for running

The shoulder straps look good in the picture but unfortunately do not work in practice. They are too straight and too tightly sewn so the edge of the straps rubs a lot on the neck, creates pain and sores after just a few kilometers.

Hyperlite Mountain Gear

Thank you for sharing your feedback, John. If you're looking for a pack specifically designed for faster-paced endeavors, we recommend checking out the Aero 28. The vest-strap harness system will likely be a much better feel when running!

versatile and well-conceived

I've hiked with this for a couple of months now (3-4 days per week), ranging from alpine day hikes to multi-day hut trips. This pack checks all the boxes: simple and minimalist, yet highly functional. This pack has taken the place of day packs like the Summit and overnight packs like the Porter 40L. It carries weight perfectly and yet does not feel too large for day hikes.

Stay away from the Hyperlite Contour 35! A piece of junk!!!

I found the Hyperlite Contour 35 I received to be suboptimal for backpacking! This backpack needs a Y strap on the top of the backpack to carry a pad. Space is at a premium inside this backpack. The bottom pocket is open at one end and anything put into that pocket, will fall out and be lost. This backpack would greatly benefit from vest-style shoulder straps to balance the load across the chest. For these reasons, I returned this poorly designed $329 dollar backpack.
