How to Choose a Pack Size

How to Choose a Pack SizeYour torso length, not your height, determines your pack size. We recommend the following to determine yours:

  1. Tilt your head slightly forward to locate the bony bump at the base of your neck. (This is your 7th cervical (or C7) vertebra).
  2. Using a flexible tape measure, have someone measure starting at that spot and running down along the curve of your spine.
  3. Place your hands on your hips so you can feel your iliac crest, which serves as the “shelf” of your pelvic girdle. (It’s the first hard thing you feel when you run your fingers down from the sides of your ribcage.) Position your hands so your thumbs are reaching behind you.
  4. Have your friend finish measuring at the point where the tape crosses an imaginary line drawn between your thumbs. This distance is your torso length.
    • Small (15.0” - 17.0” torso)
    • Medium (17.0” - 19.0” torso)
    • Large (19.0” - 21.0” torso)
  5. If your measurement falls right in between sizes (for example, if you have a 17.0” torso, so you are right on the line between a Small and a Medium), we suggest you choose the larger torso size.

I just really wanted to live this product but the shoulder straps were too separated for me making them uncomfortable. It would be amazing if there was a women’s version where the straps in the back are sewn closer together. It would also have helped is the shoulder straps are a bit more s shaped earner than straight.

Dolomites

I really like the size . I like the shoulder strap pockets . Great idea . I like the new sleeve to store stuff on the bottom of the pack. I definitely love your backpacks. I owned a couple.

I also ordered the add on pocket belt for extra storage and convenience.

I’m taking this pack with me to Italy at the end of August. We are trekking in the Dolomites . 😊

Warning, does not work for running

The shoulder straps look good in the picture but unfortunately do not work in practice. They are too straight and too tightly sewn so the edge of the straps rubs a lot on the neck, creates pain and sores after just a few kilometers.

Hyperlite Mountain Gear

Thank you for sharing your feedback, John. If you're looking for a pack specifically designed for faster-paced endeavors, we recommend checking out the Aero 28. The vest-strap harness system will likely be a much better feel when running!

Best pack for field work

I'm a wildlands ecologist and mountain runner and this is the best/most versatile pack I have ever owned. At work I spend most of my time roaming around remote field sites carrying all sorts of gear and field guides through raspberry thickets and young balsam fir stands. This pack is perfect - light, durable, spacious, easy to access/store gear. My running pack was too small to fit all the equipment and first aid gear that I bring into the field, but my backpacking pack was definitely overkill, and this pack fills its niche perfectly. I use it to commute to the office, for long days in the field, and even weekend backpacking trips or traveling to a conference. In a pinch, I could use it as a running pack, and it cinches down real nice when carrying little volume.
