How to Choose a Pack Size

How to Choose a Pack SizeYour torso length, not your height, determines your pack size. We recommend the following to determine yours:

  1. Tilt your head slightly forward to locate the bony bump at the base of your neck. (This is your 7th cervical (or C7) vertebra).
  2. Using a flexible tape measure, have someone measure starting at that spot and running down along the curve of your spine.
  3. Place your hands on your hips so you can feel your iliac crest, which serves as the “shelf” of your pelvic girdle. (It’s the first hard thing you feel when you run your fingers down from the sides of your ribcage.) Position your hands so your thumbs are reaching behind you.
  4. Have your friend finish measuring at the point where the tape crosses an imaginary line drawn between your thumbs. This distance is your torso length.
    • Small (15.0” - 17.0” torso)
    • Medium (17.0” - 19.0” torso)
    • Large (19.0” - 21.0” torso)
  5. If your measurement falls right in between sizes (for example, if you have a 17.0” torso, so you are right on the line between a Small and a Medium), we suggest you choose the larger torso size.

The perfect bag with a few notes.

I imagine many people coming to this pack once had the Acteryx alpha FL 30 backpack. This pack is superior in many ways and different in a few others. A few notes for anyone looking to make the switch.

The price tag is hefty, almost twice as much and really the only macro difference is the size zip. Having said that the side zip is well executed and makes the bag infinitely more useable in a number of situations.

Notables for anyone looking to come to this from the arcteryx bag.

    - The medium back panel is similar in length to the only back panel length that the arcteryx bag comes in.

    - I have used the arcteryx bag forever and with the sizing guide on HMG I decided to go with a large (5'11") and was surprised at how much better the longer panel felt.

-The pack volume is somewhere between the current (2026) Alpha FL 20 and 30, but closer to the current 20.

-If you use the bag with an ice axe, the two orange handle holders can be removed if you use if the way the Arcteryx bag does by pulling out the center shock cord and wrapping the handle.

-There are spots on the waist belt for ice clippers.

-The shoulder straps feel a bit big and clunky compared to the sleek fabric welded shoulder straps of the arcteryx bag, having said that, I put a large duffle on top of the bag for a short carry and was surprised at how well the bag feels under a super max capacity load, definitely something to consider as the arcteryx bags would easily get overwhelmed when laden and become less…

Barebones in all the wrong places

I debated hard on writing this review. The pack looks awesome but every time I take it out I wish I used one of my other packs. The biggest issue is the shape, no matter what I try to put in this, it doesn't fit well. Anything beyond a couple basic items and it rounds out like an overstuffed sausage. I have other minimalist packs that don't seem to suffer from this issue. The taper just seems wrong. I end up with dead space at the bottom of the pack I can't balance out no matter what I've tried. I understand this is an alpine pack but I can barely get a simple sport rack and a couple layers for the day in it. Once you've taken almost everything out of it, it does climb really well, but I have no idea how you'd actually transport what you need to the climb using this pack.

The shoulder straps are just badly padded--if it's cold they absorb moisture, if it's warm, you sweat. There's no side compression unless you add some straps of your own and even then the attachment points are oddly placed.

The fabric is super nice and burly, the pack looks awesome but that's about all the nice things I can say about it.

We really appreciate you taking time to share this feedback, Paul. The Vertex 32 is the result of substantial testing in the field, and testers ultimately favored the tapered design for easier access to the backside of their harness even though it required an especially thoughtful approach to situating gear within the pack before heading up the pitch. Being a frameless Dyneema pack can mean less breathability than other, heavier options on the market, and that’s certainly something to consider when selecting a pack. We’re glad to hear that the pack climbs well (sans gear), but we want it to work for you under most conditions, so please contact Customer Support if you have further concerns.
