How to Choose a Pack Size

Your torso length, not your height, determines your pack size. We recommend the following to determine yours:

  1. Tilt your head slightly forward to locate the bony bump at the base of your neck. (This is your 7th cervical (or C7) vertebra).
  2. Using a flexible tape measure, have someone measure starting at that spot and running down along the curve of your spine.
  3. Place your hands on your hips so you can feel your iliac crest, which serves as the “shelf” of your pelvic girdle. (It’s the first hard thing you feel when you run your fingers down from the sides of your ribcage.) Position your hands so your thumbs are reaching behind you.
  4. Have your friend finish measuring at the point where the tape crosses an imaginary line drawn between your thumbs. This distance is your torso length.
    • Small (15.0” - 17.0” torso)
    • Medium (17.0” - 19.0” torso)
    • Large (19.0” - 21.0” torso)
    • Tall (21.0”+ torso)
  5. If your measurement falls right in between sizes (for example, if you have a 17.0” torso, so you are right on the line between a Small and a Medium), we suggest you choose the larger torso size.

Initial review

This is my initial opinion of the unbound 40,

I have not used the pack yet.

Appears to be very well made, clean stitchings.

Black DCF looks like it will be very durable

Side pockets are made so it’s very easy to access your water bottles

Front pocket is very unique with the lower access opening.

My only complaint is, the shoulder straps seem narrow to me, with 2” of foam padding , I feel 2-1/2” would have been better.

Also, the shoulder strap daisy chains are not sewn completely through, but only sewn through the outer fabric of the shoulder straps. I see this as a potential weak point, especially if you were to carry a large water bottle or bottles on the shoulder straps.

Medium pack fits my 19” torso well, medium belt is a tad small for my 38” waist, so I just ordered a large, which offers 2” more foam padding or 1” on each side of the hips.

All in all, this pack is well designed and made, for the UL hiker, and I’m very happy with my purchase.

Great pack but….

I love this pack so far however I wish they sent additional straps to make use of the daisy chains so you are not limited to using the ones for compression. Also great height and depth but it could be a little wider side to side. Also get rid of the bottle neck fabric pattern. No reason the lower half can’t be just as big around as the top.

Overpriced made in Mexico

I must say, I was very excited to buy a hyperlite bag as they have been all the rage recently and I was in the market for a new bag. They’re some of the most expensive bags on the market but I waited for the sale and told myself it’s worth it.

First thing I noticed upon opening is that the bag is made in Mexico. Usually wouldn’t be a deal breaker for me but for a $400 backpack whose marketing used to pride itself on being manufactured in Maine? Felt like I was conned. Idk how the most expensive bag on the market gets more expensive while also pushing its manufacturing abroad.

Second, I just really couldn’t get this thing to carry its load well. I measured myself, and even went to the store to get measured to make sure I have the right fit. The bag puts the entire weight on my back/shoulders not matter how I wear it. Going up for sale on FB market place and by the amount of other HL bags on there, I can’t be the only one with this problem.

Appalachian Trail thru hike 2014

Started on 1-1-2024 at Springer mountain… with a junction…lg…

Needed a medium belt in Marion, Va…

Saw the unbound 55 version and fell in love…unfortunately they only had a medium size pack with a medium sized belt….carried it fine all the way to Baxter and summited Mount Katahdin on October 10th, 2024…

I needed to have a large pack… with a medium size or small size belt….

So when I got back home…ordered a large pack…and small belt …

Fits perfectly!!!

I appreciate the ability of the unbound series to be able to adjust or change the hip belt…necessary for waist adjustments for anyone who attempts a thru hike…
