The Southwest, like the Windrider and Junction, represents our vision of a versatile, adaptable, and capable tool for nearly any adventure. Since its introduction over fifteen years ago, countless backpackers have seen and done it all with theirs. The Southwest’s main pack body is built with a new, fully woven Dyneema® 200-denier fabric that offers more durability than ever before with the same signature lightweight and 100% waterproof qualities that have made Dyneema our primary material choice from the beginning. With solid-fabric exterior pockets that offer added protection for whatever’s inside in abrasive, rocky terrain, the Southwest is a comfortable pack that delivers premium performance wherever you’re headed.

- The new Dyneema® Woven Composite 3.9 combines the light weight of Dyneema® Composite Hybrid 3.8 with durability and abrasion resistance that surpasses even the heavier Dyneema® Composite Hybrid 5.9.
- Redesigned shoulder straps and a sewn-through back panel provide a more comfortable and secure fit, with better weight distribution and less wear over time.
- Redesigned outside pockets with more depth, lower back edges for easier access to water bottles, and improved security for gear (like the ice axe) make packing and accessing items more convenient.

I’ve used this pack on the PCT and for guiding hut-to-hut ski trips, and it’s been incredible — lightweight, simple, and durable. The new version is especially impressive, perfect not only for hiking but also for multisport adventures.

I bought the SW pack a little over 5 years ago and it’s been the best backpack I’ve ever owned for comfort and durability. Recently, I ripped the bottom of the pack with a bear canister inside sliding down a rock slab in the Adirondacks (Santanoni Range). I sent it back for repair and HMG repaired it free of charge.
I asked what I owed them, and this was their response.
“No payment needed, just taking the pack out for many more adventures is all we ask in return! Happy trails!”
What a great company!! People like this are hard to find nowadays.
