How to Choose a Pack Size

Your torso length, not your height, determines your pack size. We recommend the following to determine yours:

  1. Tilt your head slightly forward to locate the bony bump at the base of your neck. (This is your 7th cervical (or C7) vertebra).
  2. Using a flexible tape measure, have someone measure starting at that spot and running down along the curve of your spine.
  3. Place your hands on your hips so you can feel your iliac crest, which serves as the “shelf” of your pelvic girdle. (It’s the first hard thing you feel when you run your fingers down from the sides of your ribcage.) Position your hands so your thumbs are reaching behind you.
  4. Have your friend finish measuring at the point where the tape crosses an imaginary line drawn between your thumbs. This distance is your torso length.
    • Extra Small (< 15" torso)
    • Small (15.0” - 17.0” torso)
    • Medium (17.0” - 19.0” torso)
    • Large (19.0” - 21.0” torso)
    • Tall (21.0”+ torso)
  5. If your measurement falls right in between sizes (for example, if you have a 17.0” torso, so you are right on the line between a Small and a Medium), we suggest you choose the larger torso size.

The Southwest, like the Windrider and Junction, represents our vision of a versatile, adaptable, and capable tool for nearly any adventure. Since its introduction over fifteen years ago, countless backpackers have seen and done it all with theirs. The Southwest’s main pack body is built with a new, fully woven 200-denier fabric that offers more durability than ever before with the same signature lightweight and 100% waterproof qualities that have made Dyneema our primary material choice from the beginning. With solid-fabric exterior pockets that offer added protection for whatever’s inside in abrasive, rocky terrain, the Southwest is a comfortable pack that delivers premium performance wherever you’re headed.

Key Features:
  • The new Dyneema® Woven Composite 3.9 fabric offers a significant boost in durability and abrasion protection, surpassing that of the previous Dyneema® Composite Hybrid 5.9 fabric while maintaining the light weight of Dyneema® Composite Hybrid 3.8.
  • Redesigned shoulder straps and a sewn-through back panel provide a more comfortable and secure fit, with better weight distribution and less wear over time.
  • Redesigned outside pockets with more depth, lower back edges for easier access to water bottles, and improved security for gear (like the ice axe) make packing and accessing items more convenient.

    Great lightweight pack!

This is a great lightweight pack! Pretty comfortable so far. I like the waist belt with pockets on each side. I also still have room for more gear if needed. The 40L has plenty of room for me.

    Great pack

Light, durable, and got asked about it first time taking it out. Not a fan of packs that try to over complicate storage. Simple and clean. Great pack

Great backpack — light, practical, and stylish!

This backpack has already been with me on the Lost Coast, climbed Mt. Whitney, traveled to Madeira, just came back from Nepal, and is now getting ready for Mt. Shasta. On every trip, people ask me to share all the benefits of this backpack—and then they go and buy one themselves! :) It's comfortable, lightweight, and fits with any outfit (which is important for us girls!). :). The only thing I added was a front pocket for my phone (first pic) and a couple of stuff sacks for my gear.

    Better than Z Pack

So the current YouTube battle seems to be between the Arc Haul and the Southwest. I closely compared both. The AHs main claim advantage is the weight and carbon frame curve and mesh to reduce perspiration and improve comfort (with load lifters). 1)You MUST fit the SW correctly for the pack to carry properly 2) the SW includes waist belt in price and weight. On the AH, you pay to add everything: waist belt, pockets, lumbar strap . 3) the AH straps and buckles are thin and cheap I guess to reduce weight 4) and this is probably nitpicking but when I would be packing up, the AH will NOT stand up. Falls over and over and over. Serious PIA at daybreak. 5) SW has interior hydration bladder Mesh pocket. In summary, I used both and landed on the 70L SW. just finished section hiking GA portion of AT. I’m 6’3” 200 lb 60 yo male in pretty fair shape. Avg 10-15 miles a day depending on terrain. Not once did I finish the day with sore shoulders or low back issues. My plan is to thru hike the AT next year if my wife will let me 😬. I’ll be packing the Hyperlite SW 70L. Hope this helps!
