How to Choose a Pack Size

Your torso length, not your height, determines your pack size. We recommend the following to determine yours:

  1. Tilt your head slightly forward to locate the bony bump at the base of your neck. (This is your 7th cervical (or C7) vertebra).
  2. Using a flexible tape measure, have someone measure starting at that spot and running down along the curve of your spine.
  3. Place your hands on your hips so you can feel your iliac crest, which serves as the “shelf” of your pelvic girdle. (It’s the first hard thing you feel when you run your fingers down from the sides of your ribcage.) Position your hands so your thumbs are reaching behind you.
  4. Have your friend finish measuring at the point where the tape crosses an imaginary line drawn between your thumbs. This distance is your torso length.
    • Small (15.0” - 17.0” torso)
    • Medium (17.0” - 19.0” torso)
    • Large (19.0” - 21.0” torso)
    • Tall (21.0”+ torso)
  5. If your measurement falls right in between sizes (for example, if you have a 17.0” torso, so you are right on the line between a Small and a Medium), we suggest you choose the larger torso size.

Second hyperlite pack

Purchased the 40l Junction (white) after having the 55l Southwest (black) for several years. I simply wanted a smaller profile for travel and short trips. Great pack and happy with it. Like others have noted the mesh isn’t very stretchy but that’s really not a deal breaker. Recommended for sure.

My input as someone who’s been backpacking for 30 years: put the small stash pocket that you have on the bottom of the Unbound on this pack and perhaps replace the stiff mesh with something that expands the capacity way more and still breaths.

Enjoying the pack!

The Junction 55 is a great backpack. I won't typically use it for over 30 lbs, but under that it has proven to be very comfortable. Above 30 lbs, it seems to pull a bit heavy in the shoulders, neck. I'm between 5' 9" and 5' 10" and have a 19" torso and went with the large size which seems perfect. I've had a bit of tearing of the mesh in the back, so it needs to be handled kind of carefully.

Out of this world! Buy this pack!

I was introduced to this brand/pack by a hiking buddy my partner and I met in Yellowstone last year. Before our annual pilgrimage this season to Yellowstone, I decided to order the 55L Junction pack. For reference, I previously used a 55L Osprey pack. I can't say enough how much I love this pack! The packability, weight, comfort, and durability are truly out of this world. Plus, the material is both durable and waterproof, giving me peace of mind in all kinds of weather conditions.

I used to dread putting on my Osprey—hated struggling to get the straps over my shoulders, and the stiff hip belt would always get caught at the base of my back. Hoisting the pack from the ground onto my back was a challenge every time. The Junction, on the other hand, poses none of these issues. It's a breeze to hoist and strap on. The belt pockets are incredibly handy, and I can easily reach them while the pack is on (and a bear spray can will fit into the belt pocket with the nozzle sticking out although be mindful when hoisting you don’t “throw it out” if it’s not zipped enough). The elastic band for the hydration bladder on the shoulder strap is a thoughtful touch, placing the bite nozzle in the perfect spot. The outer storage pockets are spacious, yet they keep everything so secure that nothing falls out or shifts around when I bend over to snap pictures of flowers. And speaking of which, the pack doesn’t throw off my balance when I do that—whew, I love this pack!

The only downside is the…
