Amongst the lightest and most basic forms of shelter available, tarps create a barrier between dwellers, weather, and critters. But there’s a caveat–an effective setup can take time, and the surroundings can add further complexity to what you have to work with–or without. Enter the UltaMid 1 . Cut and shaped with six strategically placed perimeter tie-outs and requiring just one trekking pole for structure, it pitches fast and reliably every time you use it. With many of the same easy-to-live-with exterior features found on its all-enclosed sibling, the Mid 1, the UltaMid 1 is incredibly light, takes up as much space as a water bottle when it’s rolled up, covers an area of 40 sq ft, and, because it’s built with 100% waterproof Dyneema Composite Fabrics, offers outstanding protection against rain. If you’re into the simple life, the UltaMid 1 is calling you home.

Thru-Hiker’s Dream

The UltaMid1 saves me a lot of weight and gives me all the shelter I need in multi-day three season, rain and snow storms. And a windy, stormy, buggy situations, I don’t put the pole jack up and synch the tent down to the ground. I like an incense stick when I want to keep the bugs out. Great manufacturing and durable materials. The design allows you to open either the left side or right side of the vestibule, depending on tent slope. I added a stick-on clip from Zpacks to the top to hang a headlamp from the ceiling.

Suggestion for improvement: add 2-3” length to the vestibule wall for those times you have the pole jack up and want to keep the sleeping side done closer to the ground. Then the vestibule side wouldn’t be as high.

Home sweet home

Just wrapped up a thru-hike of the Colorado Trail and utilized this as my shelter. It served me very well for this trip and I look forward to more adventures with it. Key takeaways - ultralight, low volume, storm worthy, quick drying, simple to setup, plenty spacious for one, cleverly featured, and just all around awesome! Highly recommend!

Bikepack versatility

I think I found the perfect bikepacking shelter . Paired with a bivy for inclement weather or a bug bivy for summer , the versatility is key here. Very quick pitch (I use dursten poll thst fits in my frame bag easy) . This packs down super small to fit in sleep kit handlebar roll or on a fork leg .

I’m looking forward to taking this to Iceland this summer and parts of the Colorado trail . I’ll even consider carrying on ultra races if weather is iffy, for a peace of mind not having to rely on town shelters . Awesome shelter for bikepacking .

Quick, ez setup. Small footprint.

Switching from a shaped tarp to a solo mid for the balance of my 2024 PCT hike. Paired with an ultralight bivy, this tarp offers better coverage than my tarp at a very slight weight penalty. I’m 5’10, 180lbs and have plenty of room inside on a 3” pad. Peg the 4 corners with the mid square and the trekking pole lifts the mid perfect every time. The vestibule guy line needs to be a little longer and I’m not sure why HMG sewed in bug netting for the ridge vent on an open tarp.

4.5 stars.
