    Colorado Trail Bound!

This sweet shelter is headed out to Utah with me in May and on the Colorado Trail in June! I plan to pair it with a UL bivy on the CT. As someone who likes to cowgirl camp as much as possible, I like the flexibility it gives me to carry a shelter without much weight penalty. And I love the amount of space and headroom!

    Ultramid 1 tarp

I just did an overnight to try out my ultramid 1 tarp. We’ve had nothing by rain this summer so I was wanting something that was light weight and easy to set up and also make rain not an issue. I love it, love it, love it! It was large enough for me and all my gear. I’m a 75 year old woman and I’m currently using the HMG Daybreak which is small so I’m trying to use gear that’s is small. I did buy the the HMG pole but it turned out I didn’t need it because my trekking pole with the extender was perfect so I sent that back. Gail/Gutsy

    Ultamid 1

Loving it...........Great piece of gear. Very Very light shelter!! Love the bug netting on the vents. I had someone with a machine sew a strip of 8 " of no see um mosquito netting along the bottom of the tent. When pitched it hangs down to the ground to prevent mosquito's from getting in at night. An easy fix that allows air to still get in circulate. The modification is way way lighter and cheaper than your netting insert....but does the same thing.

Passed with flying colors on the AT

This is an update to my earlier review. I tried out my UltaMid 1 and insert at home (standard practice before bringing any gear on the trail) and based review on that positive expereince.

This update filed after just completed two weeks on AT in MD and PA. Unfortunately the East Coast was in the midst of unseasonably warm (okay hot) weather.

The ability to set up the tarp with 2-4 inches of ground clearence, combined with two peak vents, yielded excellent ventilation. Even with the vestibule flaps zipped closed in heavy rain, there was never any condensation inside the tent.

The 32" width of the insert was perfect for me on my 25" wide pad. The 100" length of the insert allowed me to bring all my gear inside and store forward of my 72" long pad. To keep my sleeping area cleaner, I chose to keep my pack (HMG 55L Windrider) and muddy boots safely under / inside the vestibule.

It does take a little set up practice to get the perfect pyramid shape and minimize insert sag under the tarp. That said, I found it well worth the effort. This has become my new "go to" tent for the often damp AT, and I see no reason why it won't be a winner on most any other trail.
