Major Seam Failure. Buyer beware.

I have used this pack moderately since purchasing around a year ago. The other day I pulled it out to load with a few items for a day hike and saw the main seam that runs lengthwise had completely separated making the entire pack useless. For $130 I wouldn’t expect the pack to fail so completely after such a short period. Again, the pack was barely used and definitely NOT abused in any way. The seams apparently are just glued together and that glue seams to have dried out and failed. Obviously, I would not purchase again and am having doubts about Hyperlite as a company for allowing this garbage to be passed on as their final product. Looking around the internet, I see this is a pretty common failure… with no solution.

Love it but it can’t hang

I really love this bag but it just didn’t hold up. I guess I probably put it thru more than the designers expected. Used for scrambling and overnight adventures in the Accursed during a two month bike pack. I put it to use everyday during that trip and loved it but eventually one of the shoulder straps ripped and a hole opened in it and the glued seem just popped right open. I did tend to properly over pack it.. I sewed it up and it finished up my trip just fine.. but if I hadn’t been prepared to repair it, I would of been kind of screwed… I definitely like to be able to trust my gear when I’m alone in the backcountry and although this bag has a huge piece of my heart for simplicity and functionality, I just can’t really trust it..

Well made

I'll add the HMG sternum strap and some loops for my sit pad. Great bag for side jaunts.

Nice pack but there are durability and quality of perception issues.

I purchased this pack on REI.com with the intention to use it as my sole ultralight hiking backpack, and for a while it did incredibly well for me. I really like the weight of the bag. It is astonishingly light! I also enjoyed the capacity. I really was able to use it as my only ultralight camping backpack for a while, and for a primary backpack it's not going to get any lighter than 4.4 oz. Also, it held up to rainy conditions well. For weight, size, and rain protection, I'm very happy with the product. But I'm not sure I can bring myself to purchase again until some issues are resolved. This bag was a day use bag and primary hiking bag. I had it for approximately 9 months and used it every day.

*Durability and Design Issues*

I ended up having to return the bag to REI after the main seam on the back of the bag became unglued. I was camping in sunny conditions for a period and apparently it cannot withstand direct sunlight for a long period. Additionally, I kept the bag full-- it has to withstand horizontal tensions. Since the bag is just taped or glued together along a seam running the entire length of the back of the bag, there is a risk regarding horizontal tensions. The entire back can just get split open. And that's what happened. And it was somewhat an emergency situation when it happened because I did not have alternatives except to tape the bag together again with duct tape. Even with the tape, it kept failing again and again. Finally, I returned it to REI.
