LUKE from Iowa

I love the ultralight two person tent! I camped in it for three nights to test it earlier this summer. I’m planning to take it with me to the boundary Waters of Northern Minnesota next summer on a six day excursion. I am systematically acquiring and testing lightweight gear, so that portage and hiking is a little bit easier on my aging body. I love it and plan on adding to my gear more of the products made from the Dima and other lightweight materials.

Light!

Lots of nights in this tent! Not enough space for two wide pads. Not enough space for two people and a dog. When using a neo air pad style sleeping pad, both my feet and head hit the tent walls. Kind of a short tent. I’m only 5’9”. Good headroom. Good weather protection. Does ok in the wind if you tie off your guy lines.

Both external zippers stopped functioning after the 2nd year. Ultra light zippers don’t last very long, even with care. Used the carbon poles with the tent and now there is a hole in the upper sleeve. Had to tape it. Now I just use the hiking poles. Larger surface area of the handle puts less stress on the fabric.

Great tent for one and a dog!

5 nights in Wyoming

I've had the UB 2 for a little over a year and have used it in Oregon for simple one or two-night outings, but I just returned from a five-night backpacking trip in the Cloud Peak Wilderness Area in Wyoming and used it for that trip. The tent is fantastic. A few things to note - one night at 10,350 feet, we had a big wind storm. The tent did great, although the fabric was loud. I was using my Leki poles on it, and everything held up OK, though there were gusts where I wasn't sure it would!

The other important aspect of the tent is staking it down well. I use the stakes from HMG, and they are very strong. I kept wondering how this tent would work if I were in an area where staking wasn't really an option, and I'm not totally sure how it would be set up well (rocks inside in the corners, maybe?). But staking it down is key.

I love the guy wires and how they work—there are no more double-half hitch knots for tensioning the ropes.

Also, it took me a bit to realize that the zippers on the outer ten flaps could be opened from the top to provide more ventilation, but they work great.

Overall, it is a great tent in my experience so far.
