How to Choose a Pack Size

How to Choose a Pack SizeYour torso length, not your height, determines your pack size. We recommend the following to determine yours:

  1. Tilt your head slightly forward to locate the bony bump at the base of your neck. (This is your 7th cervical (or C7) vertebra).
  2. Using a flexible tape measure, have someone measure starting at that spot and running down along the curve of your spine.
  3. Place your hands on your hips so you can feel your iliac crest, which serves as the “shelf” of your pelvic girdle. (It’s the first hard thing you feel when you run your fingers down from the sides of your ribcage.) Position your hands so your thumbs are reaching behind you.
  4. Have your friend finish measuring at the point where the tape crosses an imaginary line drawn between your thumbs. This distance is your torso length.
    • Small (15.0” - 17.0” torso)
    • Medium (17.0” - 19.0” torso)
    • Large (19.0” - 21.0” torso)
  5. If your measurement falls right in between sizes (for example, if you have a 17.0” torso, so you are right on the line between a Small and a Medium), we suggest you choose the larger torso size.

Excellent choice for UL Thru-packing and supported treks/hut-to-hut adventures

This pack is an obvious choice for the UL thru-hiker, but less obvious for supported treks and hut-to-hut adventures. I own the Elevate 22 and Southwest 55. A daypack and multi-day backpacking backpack, respectively. I needed something in between size wise and functionally wise.

The Southwest works well for everything! It is highly versatile and if you need a one-quiver bag then this is your choice. But, it is too big for supported treks and hut trips. The Elevate 22 is too small for high elevation treks where you need to pack a puffy jacket and pants. It does not do well on carrying bulky items that require volume. It is best for day hikes and warm weather treks. The other major issue I have with the Elevate is the sloping bottom. You cannot get cubes or a sleeping bag in this section and when you remove the pack you cannot set it on the ground without it falling over, which makes it difficult to get into the pack to retrieve layers.

In comes the Contour 35. I added the hip pouch belt for more stashing of essentials, which is helpful for treks and hut trips. Cubes and sleeping bags fit the large flat bottom perfectly and the bag sits on the ground without tipping over. There is plenty of room in this pack for warm, bulky layers which are typical on high altitude treks and hut trips where you need layers and choices of clothing/rain gear with the varied weather in these regions. This backpack is also great for hut treks when you don't have to carry all the cooking…

    Best pack for field work

I'm a wildlands ecologist and mountain runner and this is the best/most versatile pack I have ever owned. At work I spend most of my time roaming around remote field sites carrying all sorts of gear and field guides through raspberry thickets and young balsam fir stands. This pack is perfect - light, durable, spacious, easy to access/store gear. My running pack was too small to fit all the equipment and first aid gear that I bring into the field, but my backpacking pack was definitely overkill, and this pack fills its niche perfectly. I use it to commute to the office, for long days in the field, and even weekend backpacking trips or traveling to a conference. In a pinch, I could use it as a running pack, and it cinches down real nice when carrying little volume.

    Love this pack

I was legitimately shocked how much I was able to get into this pack and used it on a 3 night/4 day backpacking trip with my doggos. It held up super well, very durable, and I absolutely love the little pocket under the bottom of the pack for easy access storage.

    Comfortable and efficient

The Contour 35 is more comfortable than the Waypoint which has rigid frame, rigid waist belt, rigid shoulder straps. For the same size, the contour gets you a nicer fit, the add-on pockets and waist belt is a must. The pocket underneath for snacks and trash is great. The pockets on the shoulder straps are great. For a dialed in thru Hiiker it’s just the right size it’s not too big. Being waterproof is also important to me, I think it’s a must for any pack.
