When it comes to portable shelters, only some designs have been as thoroughly time-tested and proven as those built in the pyramid style. They’re easy to set up, efficiently spacious, and because of things like physics, incredibly capable of providing sanctuary in all but the most extreme weather.

While the remarkable 1.2 lbs. weight of the UltaMid 2 will be a welcome reduction to any kit’s overall mass, put any concerns to rest that it translates to a sacrifice in durability. Made of 100% waterproof Dyneema® Composite Fabric (formerly Cuben Fiber), it is an excellent waterproof barrier between you and the elements. Get cozy with the idea of unpacking the comfort and security of home, wherever home may be. The UltaMid 2 can be pitched high off the ground or tight to the ground. Set up with adjustable trekking poles or suspend from the central peak. UltaMid Inserts, Ultralight Stake Kit, and UltaMid Carbon Fiber Tent Pole are sold separately.

Simple enough for a beginner, perfect for an expert

The Hyperlite Ultamid 2 is an exceptional trekking pole tent that combines ultralight design with robust performance, making it a standout choice for serious backpackers. Setting it up is remarkably straightforward. Using trekking poles for support, the shelter’s single-pole (or dual-pole) setup is intuitive and quick, even for those new to this style of tent. The included guylines and line locks are user-friendly, allowing for easy tension adjustments to achieve a taut pitch. With a bit of practice, you can have the tent ready in just a few minutes, whether you're at a windy ridge or a dense forest clearing.

When it comes to protection against the elements, the Ultamid 2 truly excels. The Dyneema Composite Fabric, it is not only lightweight but also incredibly waterproof and durable. It shrugs off heavy rain effortlessly, ensuring a dry interior even during prolonged downpours. The tent also performs admirably in strong winds. Properly anchored, it remains stable and secure in challenging weather conditions.

I absolutely love the minimalistic design, its light weight and roominess. I'd always used free-standing tents fearing the elements but the Ultamid 2 tent has dissipated those fears.

Awesome tent

Easy to setup. A mansion for one. Good for 2 with gear. Held up well in wind. Attaching the tracking poles and getting the correct height is the only “tough” part compared to a setup that uses one pole on each end. Of course the benefit is having extra headroom, which is super nice to be able to get in and out easy. Can even change “standing”. Well hunched over. But still better than a std test height. Just make sure to set the lower edge height for the ventilation you want. I was in the mtn of Utah at 10,000, so it was colder. Play with the stake distance to get the edge lower for less draft in wind.

Awesome Tent

Used the Ultramid 2 along with the Insert with Floor and the Carbon Fiber Pole for a short weekend trip to Duncan's **** in Virginia. This tent is super light, easy to set up and very spacious. My son and I had plenty of room for ourselves and our packs with space to spare. The thin material lets in plenty of light and there was very good airflow. I'm very happy with this tent combo and look forward to longer trips along the AT.

Best shelter

I took my Mid-2 out for a 10day 120mile across Isle Royal and back. This thing was great. Used this with the half insert and the 8x10 tarp. When everyone would have been stuck in there shelters. I was able to have a full spot to sit in my chair and watch the weather Rain down. This was all under 3lbs. Can not beat it.

Review of 2 and 4, desert backpacking and on snow

I’ve used both UltaMid 2 and 4 in many combinations. The 2 is super for desert backpacking, and fine, if a bit tight, for ski traverses. The 4 is not that much bigger (or heavier) than the 2, because the catenary cut yields a very low ceiling around the periphery (unless you dig a pit in the snow underneath). This is too bad because in other ways a 4 with a half inner tent is a great, light, luxury option for two people backpacking in a rainy, buggy place, or in the snow. But in that mode, the person on the outside edge has very little room to sit up etc. But … I guess you gotta suffer if you want to sing the blues. Even with a full inner or a tarp underneath, the UltaMid 4 is tight for three people snow camping, and very tight for four people in winter conditions, even with a pit beneath. One small added note: it really would be nice if the half inner had a zipper at the narrow end, rather than on the wide side, so that the person on the outer edge could get out to pee without crawling over the person on the inner edge.
